Item ITALIAN OCCUPATION AND PATRIOTIC RESISTANCE: THE CASE OF TEMBIEN, TIGRAY, 1935–1941(Mekelle University, 2025-09-24) MEBRAHTU GEBREAGZIABHERThis thesis documents the patriotic resistance against the Italian occupation and its impact on the Tembien region between 1935 and 1941. Its main objective is to reconstruct the historical narrative of resistance efforts in Tembien and to examine the consequences of Italian rule in the area. To this end, the study analyzes the historical background of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935–1941), the characteristics and challenges faced by resistance groups, and the legacies both positive and negative left by Italian occupation on the people of Tembien Awraja. It draws on both oral testimonies and written secondary sources to document the patriotic efforts of the Ethiopian people broadly and of those in Tembien specifically. Most of the secondary materials were obtained from the postgraduate and undergraduate libraries of Mekelle University, while interviews conducted in Tembien enriched and substantiated the research. Special attention is given to the pivotal roles played by women, local patriots, and their leaders, as well as the wider national participation that contributed to the country’s liberation. In addition, the study discusses the return of Emperor Haile Selassie and the arrival of British military assistance to Ethiopia. The thesis aims to serve as a foundation for future research in this area and highlights the severe lack of accessible reference materials in the country a significant challenge identified through this study. The central argument of this thesis is the resistance was crucial in 'redefining Ethiopia' and preserving nationhood.Item THE ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY OF TEMBEN AWRAJJA, FROM 1941 TO 1991(Mekelle University, 2025-12-26) NIGUS HAFTUThe main aim of this research is to reconstruct the administrative history of Temben Awrajja from 1941-1991. To this end, the study has employed qualitative research approach with historical research design and the data was collected from informants through oral interview and written secondary sources. Accordingly, the research gives an analysis of the new administrative structure of the Ethiopia in general and Temben in particular. In the post liberation period, the emperor and the military regime introduced many reforms to strengthen the central government and to peruse modernization. Emperor Haileslassie I and the Derg have established a type of structural reforms in Temben Awrajja. The administrative rearrangements, the relationship between government officials and the people in relation to land and taxation, and the security and justice during the imperial period after liberation and during the Derg regime are also included in the research. Further the research discussed the infrastructural history of the post liberation that was developed like road construction, communication, health and educational facilities in the Awrajja. On the basis of the finding of the study, the study concluded that, there was the prevalence of maladministration in the Awrajja thought the imperial period and the Derg regime. The Awrajja administrators did not appropriately put into action the principles and orders forwarded from the central government and exploited the peopled prevalence of corruption, maladministration and injustice brought various problems and insecurity. Finally, all peoples of the Awrajja rebelled against the emperor and the Derg in different periods due to their bad administration.
