THE EFFECT OF ACTION RESEARCH IN ENHANCING EFFECTIVE TEACHING LEARNING PROCESS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF CENTRAL ZONE TIGRAY REGION

Abstract

The study was conducted to assess the effect of action research in enhancing effective teaching learning process in GSSCZ Tigray region in education. The research method employed in the study was mixed method approaches which are embedded in concurrent type of mixed method. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used. The primary data sources were teachers, department heads, vice principals, principals WEO and cluster supervisors. The school documents were used as a secondary data source. The questionnaires were pilot tested and administered to 15 teachers. To conduct the study, descriptive survey design was employed and simple random sampling to select teachers from one school, proportional sampling of teachers from each school, and purposive sampling to select department heads, vice principals, principals WEO and cluster supervisors. To the end, 3Woredas, 3secondary schools, 3secondary schools’ supervisors, 3 Weroda Education Offices, 15departmnt heads, 3 school principals, 6 vice principals and 79 teachers was included in the study. The research instrument included questionnaire, semi-structured interview and document investigation. Thus, 79 teachers and 15 department heads were filled the questionnaires. Interviews were also being conducted to enrich the qualitative data. Then, for 3 Woreda Education Officers, 3 cluster supervisors, 6vice principals, and 3school principals were interview. Quantitative data collected through questionnaires were analyzed by using different statistical tools like frequency, percent, valid percent and cumulative percent. The major factors that hinder the practices of action research in GSSCZ were explained based on their percentage responses were affect teachers negatively with the existence of inadequate; training on research activities, reference and budget in the school and computers as major part of the school plans. Therefore, it was recommended that if the school may allocate adequate budget for research activities to support teaching learning process with classroom research activities. Finally, since the study was conducted in three school and small number of populations, the researcher believes that it was important to undertake further study by using wide population in many schools in the future in that study areas.
