Abstract
This study is about factors influencing the implementation of new mathematics curriculum in Endamekoni district secondary schools. The study was lead by three research objectives which were to examine the major factors influencing the implementation of grades 9-12 new mathematics curriculum, to assess the achievement of objectives for grades 9-12 new mathematics syllabuses and their successful implementation, to identify the perception of mathematics teachers and students towards the implementation of new mathematics curriculum. The study involved two secondary schools,7 mathematics teachers, 2 school principals and 60 students. These were obtained through simple random sampling. Data collection was done by using questionnaires, interviews and documentary review. The data obtained were analysed using both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods. Accordingly, the result of the study indicated that new mathematics curriculum implementation Influenced by different factors. Such as teachers' and students’ perception towards the implementation of the syllabus were found to be very low, There was scarcity of curricula and instructional materials and shortage of time to implement the mathematics syllabus, mismatch between the new curriculum and the existing school environment, Little background knowledge of mathematics ,Lack of technical and material supports, lack of communication and low attention on the part of students ,principals, mathematics department heads and administration were observed to be the major factors influencing the implementation of mathematics curriculum. Hence, to alleviate the problems encountered in the implementation of the curriculum creating conducive school environment, continuous teacher professional development, adequate provision of curricula and instructional materials for mathematics teachers, department heads and principals are suggested. Lastly, the researcher recommended future research on factors Influencing Implementation of new mathematics curriculum.
